Easy Initials Pennant Tutorial

February 2, 2016 By Lauren

As I’ve been working on the nursery for our little man, I’ve gone through what seems like hundreds of ideas of what I wanted on the walls (you can check out the finished nursery here!).  Since I was putting a bigger statement piece over the wall with the crib and glider, I wanted something with smaller pieces for the opposite wall over the changing table to balance things out.  The idea for this little, easy initials pennant with our boy’s initials would be the perfect addition to the gallery wall!

I picked up a few random materials on clearance at Hobby Lobby and got to work, pretty much just making it up as I went.  It is the perfect pop of color in the gallery wall and was a great prop for our maternity shoot.  I love how it turned out and it was SO easy!

Cheap and easy initials pennant tutorial - Such a cute and easy project for a baby or kids room!

I’m sure you could recreate this using all sorts of materials, but here’s how I went about creating this cheap and easy little pennant.

Easy Initials Pennant Tutorial

Materials
– canvas or burlap fabric of some sort
– felt to make the initials
– letter stencils (or draw by hand)
– fabric glue
– wooden dowel rod/twine for hanging

Easy Cheap Initials Pennant Tutorial Instructions

1) Trace and cut letters for initials.

I picked up these handy stencils in the Target dollar section a while back and they are the perfect tool for projects like this.  I traced them backwards on the felt so you couldn’t see the lines later and then cut them out.

2) Cut out pennant shape from your fabric of choice.

I used the letters I’d cut out to determine the size of the pennant.  I purposely lined them up against the edge of the fabric so they’d be relatively straight and then used the outer edges of the stencils to draw straight lines outside the letters.  I used the edges of the stencils to draw diagonal intersecting lines on the bottom (I guesstimated here – another spot where crafting is an art, not a science!) and then cut it all out. I left about an extra 1-1.5 inches on the top so I could fold it over and make a loop for the dowel rod.

3) Create a loop for the dowel rod to slide into.

I put a thin line of fabric glue along the back, upper edge of the pennant and then folded it over and held it there for about 30 seconds.

4) Glue the felt letters to the pennant.

Next, I used thin lines of the fabric glue to glue the letters I’d cut out to the pennant and held them there until they’d dried a bit.

5) Slide the dowel rod through the pennant and tie twine along either edge.

Choose the length of the twine based on where you’re planning on hanging it.

6) Hang on the wall and enjoy!

I had a lot of fun making this project, and it’s another example of how letting go of the need to be perfect and just letting myself play creatively is a great way to make beautiful things.  Here’s to having fun and jumping into projects so we can create things we love!
