Five on Friday: Husband Birthdays and Shopping The House

September 16, 2016 By Lauren

Another week has gone by and it’s time for another Friday post! Here are a few updates and pictures from our week…

1) My Awesome Hubby

In case you missed my Instagram post, my awesome hubby Jordan turned 27 this past weekend! He had a cross country meet on Saturday and competed in a Half-Ironman on Sunday, so we didn’t get to celebrate much this weekend but we are excited to soon! He rocked his Half-Ironman (1.2 mile swim, 50 mile bike ride, half marathon run – INSANE) and got 1st place in his age group and 6th place overall.  Basically he’s a rock star and needs to be bragged on a bit! I’m so grateful for him and all the ways he loves me and our family so, so well.  Here’s to many more years of celebrating you, babe!

2) Small Group Starting Up

After taking a break over the summer, the church small group we host started up for the fall. This is our third year leading this group and for the first time, we didn’t add anyone new this year.  I love getting to know new people but there’s something so special about jumping into community with people who know us and know our junk without having to do any explaining or introducing.  This semester we’re going over a book called The Voice of The Heart by Chip Dodd and I’m excited to jump into some vulnerable conversations about our emotions and what they tell us about God.  I’m sure I’ll share more about that as we dive in, but for now, suffice it to say I am SUPER excited to meet with them every Tuesday night!

3) Shopping The House

As the temperatures start to drop, I’m getting more excited for fall and getting the itch to mix up some things in our house.  I love “shopping the house” and moving things from one spot to another to find the place they fit best and I’ve done a lot of that this week.  I restyled our hutch and started putting up some fall decor and I am excited to take some pictures of that and share it soon! In case you missed it, I did share some pictures of our newly updated Ikea Billy bookcase hacks that my amazingly talented hubby turned in to built-ins.  Make sure to check out that post if you haven’t already!

4) Good Reads

It seems like all my favorite authors are coming out with new books and that is a beautiful thing! I shared a few weeks ago that Shauna Niequist had come out with a new book called Present Over Perfect and I devoured that one in about 24 hours.  Then I put it down for a week and started reading it slowly to process every beautiful, challenging word.  Last week another favorite author and blogger of mine, Glennon Doyle Melton, came out with a new book called Love Warrior. This book is a vulnerable memoir about her life of eating disorders, alcoholism, and her hurting marriage and the way she describes those things is beautiful.  I definitely recommend it if you’re looking for something to add to your reading list!

5) Daily Routines

We have no trips in sight, so for the first time in a while it feels like we are settling into our new routine.  And to be honest, things are still kind of tough with Caleb.  As soon as it seems like he’s making some progress with his naps and sleeping in past 5 AM, we have a few rough days and I’m feeling a bit discouraged.  I know he will grow out of it soon, but it’s tough to see him be so, so sleepy but somehow still just not sleep.  Someone needs to tell all the babies of the world that they are self-sabotaging and need to just freaking SLEEP!

I’m trying to focus on the little joys of my days at home and find as much joy and gratitude as possible.  One silly thing that’s made me laugh a lot these past few weeks is our crazy two year old lab mix, Olive.  When we scoop her food, she has this ridiculous habit of grabbing a few kibbles, sprinting into the living room and prancing around with them, then chucking them in the air before finally examining them and eating them.  It makes me laugh every single time and I’m grateful for all the little moments like that!

Happy weekend, my sweet friends.  I hope your days are full of sunshine, cool fall weather, and joyful time with your favorite people and puppies!

Congrats to Jordan! What a huge accomplishment!!! And small group starting back up–that’s so exciting 🙂 On a random note, any tips for life with a baby and a dog?! We have an enormous German shepherd who’s so gentle with Aiden but wakes him up from his nap with barking, sheds constantly, and is generally such a hassle. I feel like I have two babies to care for!!! And I know that sounds ridiculous. Haha

Ha I don’t have many good tips, but I will say that it’s the best to see them interact now that Caleb is old enough to notice her! It is so frustrating with the barking…we honestly just keep all our blinds on the front of the house shut so she can’t see outside to bark at stuff. That and a loud white noise machine in Caleb’s room have been our go-to’s and he usually sleeps right through her barking if she does bark!

I feel like my six week old genuinely hates sleep. She’s fights naps soooo hard everyday. It’s so frustrating, so I feel your pain. I did the same thing when I read Bittersweet, I made myself slow down and let the words sink in. I need to check out her new book.

Ahhh Courtney that is such a hard stage! The first three months are seriously so hard and exhausting and not as full of rainbows and newborn snuggles and sunshine like I thought they would be. I hope you guys are doing okay and getting more sleep!
